Explosion rocks Enugu, Scores in pains

Many persons were allegedly  wounded Monday evening in Amokwe Udi in Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State when high calibre pyrotechnics popularly called Fireworks exploded in a residential building.

Enugu State Police Command’s Spokesman, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, who confirmed the incident to Whirlwindnews, said that no life was lost but added that those injured had been rushed to the hospital.

Whirlwindnews gathered that a trailer load of high calibre fireworks was brought into the house on March 15, 2015 by an undisclosed person.

The objects were said to have suddenly exploded at about 5pm Monday leaving several occupants of the house with varying degree of injuries.
The loud explosion, which reportedly shattered part of the building, caused panic in the village as the residents took to their heels suspecting that it could be a bomb.

The police spokesman said reports reaching the command indicated that “there was a trailer load  of the said high calibre pyrotechnics (Fireworks) brought into the house on March 15, 2015.”

According to him, men of the Explosive Ordinancee Department of the state command and other operatives have already cordoned off the scene of the explosion.

Amaraizu added that the  police have commenced full scale investigations into the incident with a view to finding out the possible cause of the sudden explosion.

“Instant analysis of the incident by the operatives of the Explosive Ordinance Department on ground at the scene of the explosion revealed that it was occasioned by high calibre pyrotechnics (Fireworks)  in a large quantity packed in the house of the owner that exploded,” the police spokesman said.
