For vandalizing installations belonging to the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC), a middle aged man, Mr Ewa Ikechukwu has bagged five years imprisonment.

Justice M.A Onyetenu of the Federal High Court, Abakaliki, who handed down the judgment said the act committed by Ikechukwu was an economic sabotage, aimed at parading government in the bad light.

He stated that he would not give the culprit an option of fine but would ensure he served fully his jail term to serve as deterrent to others, who had caused the country “great economic loss by engaging in unwholesome activities to make money”.

Ikechukwu was caught on January 9, this year by security agents at Obi –Obiri while vandalizing the substation’s armoured cables and was taken to the police station at Ekumenyi.

The vandalism was said to have led to the disruption of EEDC services to many consumers in the area.

Meanwhile, the EEDC said it had deployed over 400 distribution transformers of various capacities within the last six months to reinforce effective coverage of her network of the five States of
Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo States.

According to the Public Affairs Manager of the EEDC, Mr Eugene Anionwo, the deployment of the transformers was in line with her corporate agenda and in strict adherence to the company’s core values of Integrity, Customer Service and Performance.

He stated that the massive injection of the transformers into its network has contributed immensely to ensure improved electricity distribution and quality customer service delivery in all the five
states of South Eastern Nigeria.

“The network reinforcement projects are aimed at strengthening the distribution of electricity supply and ending decades of epileptic power supply previously witnessed across the region, to ensure
customer satisfaction and goodwill”, he said.

Anionwo explained that prior to the takeover of the company by the Interstate Electrics Limited  a year ago, many  transformers operated by the company were old, overloaded or out of service.

He added that the resultant effect was that customers suffered load-shedding and low-voltage supplies, stressing that EEDC’s efforts have started to alleviate their suffering.
