World Cancer Day: Elegbeleye advocates regular checks for athletes, others

As the world marked this year’s Cancer Day, Director General of National Sports Commission, NSC, Hon Gbenga Elegbeleye has beckoned of Nigerian Sports Men and Women to wary of their health by ensuring regular checks.

Hon Elegbeleye who spoke in Abuja where Ministry of health organized a novelty game as a means of creating awareness about cancer scourge assured that the NSC was ready to partner with relevant stakeholders to fight all manners of killer diseases.

According to him, “the initiative by the health ministry to carry out cancer check and create more awareness is laudable. If everybody is aware of dangers cancer can cause in the society at large, then all of us should be proactive and check like what ministry of health is doing.

“I believe many people are dying of cancer but with regular test and awareness on the causes of cancer, it can be reduced to the barest minimum. But when people don’t know even the causes of cancer and thousands are dying of cancer.

“Of recent take one of our Sport Men unfortunately died of cancer. People say cancer is terminal disease but early test will be the best.”

On his part, Coach of the U-23 national team, Samson Siasia who was also a Guest when Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, SWAN, FCT Chapter took their Health Ministry counterpart in a novelty match commended the organisers of the event for using soccer and sports to raise awareness for cancer.

“This is one deadly disease we all must rise up against. It is a feat we must identify with. I am so moved and decided to make guest appearance at the event.”
