As the saying goes ‘when two elephants fight, the ground suffers’. This is not really different from what is happening to the people of Adamawa State who have unwittingly become victims of the unsettled fight over the speakership of the state house of assembly.

The battle for supremacy between Hon Umaru Ahmadu Fintiri and Hon Jerry Kundisi is now turning into an endless war of two elephants with devastating effects on the entire people of the state.

The question one is bound to ask is who then is the speaker? Fintiri or Kundisi?

Umaru Fintiri seems to have the public support and appear to control the house at will because of his pragmatic style of leadership even when he had the opportunity to be the governor of the state in acting capacity.

However, Kundisi, the longing serving member in the house is no doubt receiving and enjoying the support  of Governor Bala Nggilari whom the governor officially announced and endorsed as the new leadership of the house.

Other questions agitating the minds of the people are whether either of the two fighters are not really aware and conscious of the limited time they have as the house would wind up for the in-coming lawmakers; Don’t they have serious matter to discuss at the house plenary instead of the endless war?

Many are of the opinion that the behaviour of the lawmakers-gladiators lack common sense as they do not appear to defend the people of the state whom they represented.

Fintiri is highly hailed with celebrated names and generally known and referred to as the “Man of the moment, ATM or Fintiri Ikon Allah” because of his unrelenting spirit in the fight and support for the impeachment of former Governor Murtala Nyako that paved way for him to become the acting governor of the state.

He gained the confidence of the people by immediately completing many projects and settling accrued salaries of the state civil servants running into many months. This act gave him an edge over Jerry Kundisi whom some other people of the state want as a speaker.

Fintiri succeeded in having the loyalty of most of the lawmakers because of his shrewd political astuteness.

These qualities of his made his faction to be more formidable against the faction of Jerry Kundisi which they nicknamed “Government House” Speaker. He locks and unlocks the assembly hall at will and decides the activities of the house because of the support he enjoys from his colleagues and other politician outside the corridors of the state power.

But Kundisi who have some few lawmakers with him enjoys the undisputed endorsement of Governor Nggilari with Government House as venue of their plenary meetings. Being a long term serving member in the state assembly and a legal practitioner, he is know to be a controversial lawmaker who do not believe in dancing to the tune of anybody but does things according to the provisions of the constitution.

He is much aware of the tricks and intrigues of what is happening in the house since 2003, probably the only lawmaker that has the wherewithal to convince other face the other faction as he is fearless and will all the time call a spade a spade no matter what happens.

But many people see Jerry’s camp as not receiving the general acceptability of Adamawa people because of the involvement of the state governor whom they label as “slow governor”.  The governor is seen as a tight-fisted man that hardly dashes people money, and if he does at all, is not something to write home about. This habit he shares in common with Kundisi make them the two uncelebrated politicians in the state.

Before now, there has been a suspicion of enmity brewing between Nggilari and Fintiri over who controls the Madagali politics, their LGA of origin. It is as a result of these that he is scheming his way to form a faction against Fintiri. Kundisi also employs the political fracas between Ngilarri and Fintiri to have hit at Fintiri who has been a serious barrier of his dreams as the next speaker in the House of Assembly.

He had described Fintiri as a pompous speaker who has been short changing members from the state statutory allocation and constitutional allowances they receive from the state government. At one point he cooked up a story of Fintiri  planning to impeach Nggilari who initially wanted to scheme his way to the Government House when he got the opportunity of  impeaching the former Governor of the state, Admiral Murtala Nyako who has now turned a fugitive in the western world.

At this stage, the people of the state expect more of synergy between the executive and legislature, unity and among the serving members to have a peaceful transition and a remarkable hand over to newly elected lawmakers as most of the serving members did not win in the last elections.

At the moment, no serious thing is virtually taking place at the house plenary sitting, bills are not passed, no oversight function is being done because the struggle between the two houses who have been embroiled in a fight that is clearly shown to be a personal and selfish fight that does not have the interest of the common people.
